"A Rose For Emily" by William Faulkner and The Glass Menager
"A Rose For Emily" is a short story written by William Faulkner, which describes how the protagonist Emily Grierson personality is developed by the contribution of various characters in the story. Laura Wingfifld, the central character of The Glass Menagerie by Tenseness Williams whose personality is also shaped by the actions of the other character in the story. Miss Emily is a victim of circumstances which she later on faces in life through her decisions. In Laura's case, she suffers from decisions that are made for her by her mother and brother. Because of Emily and Laura's environment and also the people around them, their personalities have many similarities and differences; both Emily and Laura are anti social, but for different reasons. After witnessing many tragedies, it drove Miss Emily to her insanity. Also because of her family status Emily shows arrogance. Unlike Miss Emily, Laura illustrates humility and is incredibly shy, which makes her isolated from the real world and seem "peculiar" to the outside. Miss Emily displays anti social behavior mainly because of her over protective father. Miss Emily's father caged her inside the same house with the same butler. Emily's father would scare off any man who became i
But unfortunately Laura dropped out because of her failure to socialize with other students and indigestion. I agree with Donald Akers who writes about how "Emily's repressive life therefore contributes to her (rather Sever) psychological abnormality: necrophilia (258). Laura is described to be very fragile just like her glass collection, but she would walk on the cold street to avoid her typing classes. Finally, both authors William Faulkner and Tenseness Williams display two characters whose personality derives from the people around them and convey nothing but sorrow in their lives. Laura spends her days cleaning her glass collection of different types of animals and listen to old records. "When her father died, it got about that the house was all that was left to her. Many of the townspeople witnessed Emily's abnormal behavior after her father's death. When the druggist asked her what was it for she did not answer, all she said was "I want the arsenic. Laura does not talk back to her mother; she shows respect and does exactly what her mother tells her to. But whether it is or not, you will come to the table. Emily comes from a typical Southern rich family, because of the way she was brought up by her father their position in society Emily believed she was superior, this made her seem arrogant. For example when Laura found out her gentleman caller was non other then her high school crush (Jim O'Connor) she asked her mother for permission to be excuse from the dinner table but her mother declined, so Laura unhappily agreed and came to the dinner table.
