A Brief History of the Recording Industry

In this chapter it talks about a brief history of the music recording industry. From the invention of the phonograph in 1877 we see the important impact that radio has on society. Throughout the years the music recoding industry has been able to evolve and stay up to date with all other inventions. Through the brief history in this chapter we see some same occurring issues brought up, mainly the technological innovation, copyright, and growth within and between cultural industries. All issues keep on coming up throughout the years so in short I found the thesis was that "...many issues that were central to the music industry even before the advent of the recording sound have remained central after almost a century of technological change and global expansion." I found that throughout this chapter every topic relates back to this idea of change through the main issues and the similarity that each generation issues have.

Where will it go now? No one can tell one can only help support the artist and the industry in the years to come. With this information we can see that the growth of the industry is what keeps the recording industry going. Even though there were copyright laws in place it became a lot harder to protect the artist(s) music with the growing new technological advances. This supports the thesis by stating that the issue of copyright started off with the problem of theft and plagiarism of the lyrics to more recent the internet downloading of music for free. This brought the importance of youth in the music industry which created the genera of popular music. This leads on to another major issue of copyright in the recording industry. To keep the progress and maintance of the industry alive we need to go out and buy the new inventions to keep the industry up to date. By the 20th century recording music had become an important business. This society would sell licenses to consumers to use the music and would distribute the fees to members of the society. The recording industry soon transferred over to electrical recordings which boomed sales tremendously. Specific examples of the growth have been the invention of the eight track in the 1970's, and the invention of the digital audio tape in the 1990's. With the concerns such as the issue of Napster, downloading music for free, maybe we should all try and help the industry by not downloading any more music. This continues to be an important innovation to this date. As technology advances we now see countries banding downloading music and creating online sites to purchase music instead. This not only helped sales but also created a more powerful music industry.
