Vicente Aleixandre
Vicente Pio Marcelino Cirilo Aleixandre y Merlo (Vicente Aleixandre) was a Spanish poet that was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1977. Aleixandre was born in Seville, Spain on 26 April 1898. His father, Cirilo Aleixander Ballester, was a civil engineer and was said to have come from a family of prosperous artisans. His mother, Elvira Merlo Garcia de Pruneda, came from a middle class family (Galenet). Aleixandre lived in Seville until the age of eleven, and in 1909 moved with his family to Madrid Spain. After completing high school, Aleixandre went on to college at the University of Madrid. He was banned from publishing his work for several years because of his unwavering political stance. In 1954, his piece Historia Del Corazon was based on human life, while his 1962, In a Vast Domain, focused on death, time and human solidarity (Britannica). The gloomy outlook was said to have been caused by his illness and the Spanish censorship of publications (Galenet). During these first years, many could have viewed his writing as pessimistic. Aleixandre's first publication of his poetry came in 1926, in the Spanish magazine, Revista de Occidente. The aforementioned are just a small sample of Aleixandre's published works. After the ban was lifted, Aleixandre published several poetry collections. Aleixandre's memberships include: Real Academia Espanola, American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (honorary fellow), Hispanic Society of America, Monde Latin Academy (Paris); corresponding member of Magala Arts Academy, Academy of Science and Arts (Puerto Rico), and Hispanic-American Academy (Bogota). Although some of the pieces still dealt with death and loneliness, they were also of a lighter note, which dealt with human solidarity, compassion towards human beings, and portraits of everyday life.
