Nature vs. Nurture

What gives a human being personality lies within the environment. Factors in the environment control how the personality is patterned, and provides the foundation to how a person should operate and behave. Studies of twins try to prove the contrary, that in fact genetics are the controlling factor in one's personality. However, by looking at ferals and isolates, it has become apparent that the environment contributes greater influence on human development rather than nature. Identical twins indicate that heredity may contribute to freakish similarities between them, but are based on minor theory. Rhesus monkeys link external stimulus to personal behaviour. An enriched environment also generates enriched opportunities for a child. Nurturing is above all the controlling factor in personality formation.
Observation is key to understanding the development of children. Through observations of isolates it has become clear that the environment controls human behaviour. Isolates are children that have been secluded from socializing with others and proper nourishment. Anna is an example of the most severe form of isolation. She was kept in an attic for the first six years of her life, and as a result she never learned to speak, walk, or do anything intelligent (Davis). When she was removed from her mother's care, she slowly learned to accomplish simply tasks, such as buttoning her shirt (Davis). Before Anna was placed in a nurturing environment, she was well below being "normal". By removing her from the hostile conditions she was in and placed in an enriched surrounding, she was successfully approaching normality before she died. If Anna had not been taken out of the mediocre care of her mother, she would not have developed remotely close to normality. The consequences of isolates clearly demonstrate the power that nurturing has, and shows how the environment controls human behaviour.
