Similarities and differences -Beach Burial and Futility
War tends to be a political game controlled by the people in power in the country. Its a game that can be glorious but can also be a tragedic as it can cause millions of deaths and loss of properties. World War I and World War II can be said to be the biggest wars off all as there were many countries involved. Many politicians, historians, the public and even the poets commented on these two wars, Kenneth Slessor and Wilfred Owen are two of them. Poets write anti-wars poem simply because they want to express their sentiments to war. Kenneth Slessor wrote "Beach Burial" and Wilfred Owen wrote Futility. The theme of Beach Burial and "Futility" is war. The public and politicians put both wars forward as something glorious and patriotic. However, the wars turned out differently. Wilfred Owen experienced World War I and Kenneth Slessor experienced World War II. Although they experienced the wars during different periods, their opinions on wars were very similar and they both skillfully used poetic devices to express their sentiments on wars. The similarities in their attitude towards war are clearly reflected through their poems. Both poets wrote anti- war poems and they both agreed to a high extent that war is unnecessary and fool
They understand that their poems can't stop wars happening, but they can at least bring an awareness to various people that war is not just as simple as a glorious event, beneath it, people has given up their lives to fight for their country and the effect is not just a immediate effect but a long term one. Slessor has wrote his poem based on his personal experience whereas Owen hadn't as he didn't took part in the war physically. Owen used poetic devices like form, irony, imagery and tone. Though both poets expressed their poems in a different manner, the point that war kills and affects people physically and mentally was stated in both poems which also the reason why poets create anti- war poems. He felt sorry for the dead men and his feelings were perplex and dreary. The differences between the two poems make them unique in its own way. For instance, " Was it fro this the clay grew tall? Or what made fatuous sunbeams toil" is one of the example in the poem. Generally, Owen has made good use of poetic devices to create a tightly structured and hard writing poem. Owen believed that war made all the work that were done by the creator in creating the individuals, the soldiers who had worked on the farm creating food useless by taking away his life. In addition, the use of similes and symbolism clearly illustrated images and scenes in the poem and have the ability to further the understanding of the readers. For instance, " The convoys of dead sailors come; at night they sway and wander in the waters far under" quoted from Beach Burial pictured the dead bodies of the sailors floating in all directions in the sea. Slessor and Owen skillfully applied poetic devices to convoy their opinion and sentiments to war. Nevertheless, this didn't affect the quality of Owen's work. "Between the sob and clubbing of gunfire" reflects a depressing atmosphere and visibly shows that Slessor's view to war is disapproving.
