The Internet

             The Internet has been called an amazing tool, a waste of time and a vacuum. The Internet was first started as ARPANET, a connection between four Universities was set up so they could all share research off of networked mainframes. To what we have today which is a global network connecting millions of computers. More then a 100 countries are linked together for exchange information such as data, news and opinions. As the size of the networks grew so did its capabilities: In its first 25 years, the Internet added features such as file transfer, email, Usenet news, and eventually HTML. Now, new developments come to the Internet one right after the other, some may know one of these as Google.
             Unlike online services, which are centrally controlled, the Internet is decentralized by design. Each Internet computer, which is called a host, is independent. Its operators can chooses which Internet services to use and which local services to make available to us, the global Internet community. Remarkably this design has turned out to work remarkably well. There are a variety of ways to access the Internet. Most online services, such as America Online and SBC Yahoo offer access to some Internet services. It is also possible to gain access through a commercial (ISP) Internet Service Provider.
             Many people use the terms Internet and World Wide Web interchangeably, but in fact the Internet is a massive network of networks, a networking infrastructure. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet. Information that travels over the Internet does so via a variety of languages known as protocols. Where as the World Wide Web is a way of accessing information while using the Internet.
