The Tempest
The tempest is seen as one of the greatest plays of Shakespeare, combining his years of labor and philosophy into one play. The Tempest is viewed as one of the greatest works of William Shakespeare; the play encompasses many themes and Shakespeare provides insightful social commentary on the dealings within Britain during the Elizabethan era. The Tempest disputes issues such as hierarchy, power, individualism and colonialism, as well as challenging the viewpoints that there is only black and white and that an individual is either good or evil. The tempest creates the illusion of justice; Prospero is usurped from his position of power and therefore creates the tempest in order to return himself to his rightful position. Prospero feels that he has been unfairly treated yet has no problems with enslaving both Ariel and Caliban. Prospero's view of justice is rather one sided and seeks to benefit only him; he introduces Miranda to Ferdinand and orchestrates that they fall in love so that Prospero will have safe passage back to Naples and hopefully regain some o
Shakespeare firmly believed that people were complex with definite shades of gray. The tempest also highlights the idea that people have a choice with regards to their actions, for example when Prospero creates the opportunity for Sebastian and Antonio to murder the king and they attempt to take it and plot his murder. Shakespeare presents us with many ideas that were very advanced for his time. The play identifies many relationships in which a person has power, and a person who is under the influence of power. Due to his usurpation Caliban expresses deep hatred towards Prospero as well as Miranda and in the play states that he wished they had never taught him their horrible language, he also attempts to rape Miranda. Another relationship explored is that of Alonso and his nobles and how some like Gonzalo support him, yet some plot against him. The tempest symbolizes the power of Prospero's magic, as well as the dark side of his character. Caliban appears at first to be a spiteful monster, yet when he speaks passionately of the island we are shown a whole different facet of his personality, indicating that he is composed of both good and evil. The Tempest reflects on the influence of colonialism, which was just beginning in Britain at this time. Magic is another important theme, as essentially it creates the catalyst for the entire play - The Tempest. Prospero creates the magical banquet, and the wedding masque using his magic and both events contribute to the fascination of the island. Prospero tortures and abuses Caliban yet seems almost friendly with Ariel at times and once again we are shown that Prospero is a mixture of both good and evil. In conclusion Shakespeare presented such insightful philosophy and ideas within the play, that the text is still being applied in present time.
