What is A Myth?
In order to devise an accurate definition of what a myth really is, a handful of elements must be incorporated into one. A myth is not just a fictional story. A myth needs to follow certain guidelines in order to be categorized as such. Some rudiments of a myth would incorporate religion of any kind, a way to explain the origin of a concept, a connection with other stories within the same society, a communal authorship due to the fact that it came into existence through oral tradition, and it is believed to be true by the member of the culture from which the myth was originated. These are the features that make a story a myth. Religion is a corner stone of mythology. All mythological stories are based on the belief of some higher existence or supernatural being. Greek Mythology revolves around many gods and goddesses. The stories from ancient Greece customarily center on the many deities that were believed to be in power in this culture. A good example in literature is the play Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus. It was written in 430 B.C. This is a drama about Prometheus. Prometheus was the wisest Titan. When Zeus revolted against Crones, Prometheus fought on Zeus's side. Zeus gave Prometheus the task of creating man.
Narcissus was in love with himself. Taking a look back at the play, Prometheus Bound, there are definite connections between this tale and other such stories. She had a son and Hercules was born many generations later. The Greeks built temples to their gods and goddesses and offered tributes and sacrifices. So, is Grendel a mythological novel or not? Its not. There are many other legends that give a rationalization for an occurrence that people didn't really understand. The story of Echo is a fitting paradigm. The Iliad and the Odyssey are classic examples of this feature. The legend of Prometheus being chained to the mountainside includes within it; the story of Prometheus bringing fire to man, the story of Zeus's love affair with Io, the story of Hermes killing Arges in order to set Io free and thus explaining the derivation of the design on the peacock's tail, the story of Epaphus who founded the city of Memphis in Egypt, and the story of Hercules. Is authorship communally shared? No, John Gardner wrote Grendel and we know this without skepticism as to its origin. They cover two small parts of the history of the Trojan Wars. He believed that he was the only one in the universe and therefore didn't believe in any supernatural beings. Echo was a nymph and servant to Hera, the wife of Zeus. Hercules is the rescuer of Prometheus. Does it explain some origin or the manner of things? No, it's a fictional story that doesn't really have an explanation for something.
