Domestic VS. Import

             What one question can spark a long debate between any two people? What can a mechanic, high school student, and a rich suburbanite discuss with such ferocity as to never discern either of the others as competent? One thing comes to mind, import or domestic. With European automobiles being available to potential buyers in the United States since the early twentieth century this competition has been around for quite some time. Then with the introduction of Asian automobiles to American market around 1960 the battle became even more fervent. Today in 2004, the war for market dominance still rages in the United States with many tests and standards to use to compare individual cars. Companies like Honda and General Motors are competing in such categories as horsepower, torque, price, handling, reliability, fuel economy, and safety. Though Honda, in an attempt to end this competition, is beginning to make automobiles in the United States, the truly American born companies are still the dominant vehicles based on the previous categories when compared to Asian imports.
             Ever since Ford created and started using the assembly line for the Model T the number of choices in cars has increased along with the possible market. Due to the ability to mass produce cars at nearly half the price as before, due to assembly lines, the middle class American became able to afford a car. Along with the increase in car production, Ford also gave a generous raise to its workers, five dollars a day. The increase in pay was due to the thought that it would make Ford's workers potential customers as well, and it worked. Those new concepts were not the only ideas that led to increased sales in the United States. Another idea tied in with the invention of the assembly line was interchangeable parts.
