The Awakening

            Imagine yourself as a woman who does not think about anything but her husband and children and you live in a society that expects you to follow that in your entire life! That is what Edna Pontellier has to face in the novel called "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin. She faced severe consequences because she went from "unthinking" to extreme thinking. Edna Pontellier transforms herself from one form of "unthinking individual to another. Blindly following society's expectations for the early part of her life, she becomes more dangerously "unthinking" after her awakening, as she never considers the consequences of any of her actions.
             Edna Pontellier followed the society's expectations of being a mother-woman, taking part in formal socializing and listening to her husband. Women in her community were "women who idolized their children, worshipped their husbands, and esteemed it a holy privilege to efface themselves as individuals and grow wings as ministering angels." (10) This suggests that if women don't follow this rule then they aren't a woman. Women should consider it a great opportunity to don't even think about themselves as individuals but think about their family. That is the best thing a woman can do is what this is suggesting. Moreover she was expected to listen to her husband whenever he wanted to say something to her. "She [had been] overcome with sleep, and answered him with half utterance. He thought it was very discouraging that his wife, who is the sole object of his existence, evince[s] so little interest in things which concerned him, and value[s] so little his conversation." (6) Edna was being looked as bad wife by her husband because she was not listening to him. So what if she is sleeping she should listen to me, because I am her husband wondered Mr. Pontellier. These things kept continuing in her life until two strangers arrived...
