Examine the concept(s) of power in Titus Andronicus with special attention to how it is dramatised. Many of Shakespeare's revenge plays depicted the central character as a person of great importance who demanded respect. Since the ultimate control of the state, in his time, was in the leading monarch's hands, kings and queens were what the plays concentrated on. Eg King Lear, Julius Caesar, Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, Macbeth and the text that will be discussed in this essay, Titus Andronicus. Titus Andronicus was Shakespeare's first revenge tragedy. He makes a great impact on the audience with this play, which incorporates violence, drama, honour, loyalty, love and betrayal - all the elements of a classic revenge tale. The human mind if very easily corruptible and people holding powerful and influential positions are most susceptible to that corruption. Lavinia's brutal rape and harsh graphic violence such as beheading, severed limbs and a cannibal feast at the end signifies that he was attempting to shock the theatre going audience and make an impression of his first tragedy. He is able to stand back and watch the events unfold. Rome is finally given an emperor who will not misuse his authoritative position. Titus at this point is powerless to do anything, having cut himself off from society after two of his sons are framed for Bassianus' murder. The power of men over women is also a major issue in this play. Her status and queen of the Goths enabled her to lead them with honour.
