Relevance of 18th Century Literature

             The eighteenth century, known for its romantic movement saw the emergence of the essay format in literature. Today it provides readers with the background from which current literature is based. The greatest literature from that period forms part of the literary canon, and it is that canon which is essential to the knowledge of any modern reader. Where writers of the eighteenth century wrote from the knowledge gained from earlier texts, writers today can similarly learn from the literature of past eras. The moods and themes of eighteenth century texts are not lost over time, as the issues raised from them are still relevant today. Through the authors Addison, Steele, Pope and Swift, we can deduce that eighteenth century literature has much to offer a modern reader.
             The literature of the eighteenth century builds a foundation from which modern texts are made. The development of today's literature can be seen by the development of the essay format in literature. When Addison and Steele broke the 'rules' of classical literature, they became pioneers in the Romantic movement. (Allen, Robert J) From the popular publication of The Spectator and most notably the issue Sir Roger at Church, Joseph Addison comments on the society of the time and displays an early incarnation of the essay format. Within this issue, Addison writes a fictional story that shares certain similarities to the essay style today. This edition concerns the topics of religious faith, gentlemanly conduct and chivalry, and like the essays of today makes a constructive argument towards a certain opinion or point of view. Sir Roger at Church, like many of the eighteenth century essays was a portrayal of the thinking mind and displayed the thinking process that leads to a conclusion.
