Blade runner/brave new world

"Whilst ways of telling stories may change over time, human concerns and values remain the same."A significant concern for humanity is the effect of human interference on natural rhythms and its relationship with the natural world. These issues are explored in Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley and Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott, where the composers contrast between true nature and the wild to illustrate the concerns prevalent in their respective contexts, achieved through the use of satire, irony, characterisation, setting and language. In both texts, the theme of humanity overturning nature is raised, developments in science and technology are critiqued, and conformity and consumption is explored. In both Brave New World and Blade Runner, a dystopic vision of the future is presented to the responder. They are both the products of their contemporary political and social contexts; each is attempting to address the social situations of their times, commenting about society as a whole. Brave New World addresses communism and political totalitarianism, through the use of production line styled humanity, conditioning, and Bokanovsky's process. Blade Runner, on the other hand, focuses on the domination of capitalism

Scott attempts to comment about the dehumanising effects that technology can have on society by exploring the ethical and social issues regarding genetic engineering through the Replicants. Blade Runner's film noir genre carries the themes and atmosphere of destruction, corruption, disillusionment and underlying evils, and highlights the isolation of humanity caused by economic profiting. The misuse of technology reflects and embodies a juxtaposed view to what lies ahead for humanity. The Replicants are used to illustrate humanity's moral bankruptcy as they are created as slaves that cannot outlive humans, despite the knowledge that they are superior. As a result these people are portrayed as lacking human qualities such as spirituality and empathy. Blade Runner explores a world that is driven by technology. Nature and the environment are common elements of context behind the texts. Scott captures the fragility and sadness of the loss humanity has suffered through Zhora's death, bringing to mind the question of moral justice and what defines us as humans. In Zhora's death scene, her violent body language as she desperately tries to save herself from retirement, along with Leon's mourning over her death, reveals that she is not merely a "skin-job left on the pavement". The low angle shot of Tyrell's ziggurat illustrates the majesty and dominance of Tyrell over supreme authority. Sexual desires are easily fulfilled through sex hormone chewing gum, and "Orgy Porgy', a parody of the nursery rhyme "Georgie Porgie", a combination of religious ritual and group sex to ensure solidarity in the participants and occurs during solidarity services, which have replaced mass services. Blade Runner was created when the Cold War was coming to a close and the political spectrum was polarised between capitalism and communism. As an extension to religious demoralising, sexual promiscuity is encouraged to prevent strong relationships forming, habituated through the manipulation of social values and becomes and accepted throughout the people's upbringing. In this context, religious symbols are replaced by commercial icons such as Ford in place God to emphasize society's lack of spiritual depth and guidance. The film noir elements of perpetual rain, darkness, pollution and smoke, show the consequences of a society detached from nature and happiness.
