The Concept of Honour Portrayed in the Dramas Othello and An

             The reputations that people carry have a lot to do with their code of honour. Showing honour makes a person respected and strong and dishonour brings shame and misfortune. In the Greek tragedy Antigone written by Sophocles and the Shakespearean tragedy Othello written by William Shakespeare, honour is carried throughout these two dramas which in turn lead to tragic ends. Actions of honour are seen in both good and evil ways and are portrayed by the main characters in both dramas through their love for others, possession of control and the quest for revenge. There are many events which take place in both Othello and Antigone which reveal the true self images of each character by the honour in which they carry.
             In the Greek tragedy Antigone by Sophocles, the protagonist, Antigone, shows honour for her brother through her love for him and her family. Her two brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices, killed each other in the war of Thebes, but because Polyneices fought against Thebes in war Creon, the new king, demands that he does not receive a proper burial and who ever deceives his wishes will be stoned to death. This event annoys Antigone because she believes in the gods rulings that everyone should be buried with respect, so she decides to give her brother a burial: "...I will bury him; and if I must die, I say that this crime is holy: I shall lie down with him in death, and I shall be as dear to him as he to me" (Sophocles, Prologue 1427: line 55-58). This love for her brother shows that she honours and cherishes her family, even though she shows dishonour to Creon by defying his wishes, Antigone's actions illustrate that honouring family is more important. Even when Antigone is confronted with Creon she reminds him that the laws of the gods are far more sacred than his ruling: "Your edict, King, was strong, But all your strength is weakness itself against the immortal unrecorded laws of God."
