Creating the Perfect Career: Interior Design

If you've ever walked into a room, office, or hotel lobby and immediately noticed an array of color, fabric, lighting, and furniture that creatively pleases the eye, you've witnessed the work of an Interior Designer. Interior Decorating is both a science and an art, a business and a profession (Ball 5). A designer uses his or her own creativity and practicality to create a surrounding that is "satisfying, creative and appropriate to human needs" (collegeboard.com). The job of the Interior Designer is to team up with a client to find out their needs and wants for the particular space they want to redecorate. The finished result must "enhance and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public" (Eureka). By working with such items as wallpaper, furnishings, paint, floor coverings and accessories, the designer can create an environment that is physically, intellectually, and emotionally suitable for their client(s). It must also have a "general social, ethical, economic, and political impact" (collegeboard). To meet these needs the designer must "study the different tastes and living habits of their clients, reflect their personality, and meet important functional requirements" (?, 118).

To have a client with a smile on their face after a finished result is well worth the efforts and you go home knowing that you have made an imprint in their life forever. The Designer is in charge of all the different aspects of the new interior, therefore, according to (?) the designer must "supervise all the work and make sure everything is done right and is properly placed. The apprentice will perform chores such as filing furniture catalogues and photos, samples of fabrics, wallpaper, wood and paint. The latest average wage was found in the Occupational Employment Statistics Survey (OES) as $3,589 per month for the category of Interior Designers (Eureka). I feel that Interior Design would definitely be a suitable job for me because my plan for college exactly follows the pathway to this career, the salary is sufficient for me and the lifestyle I choose to live, and the work environment is fun and exciting. Combined with a spouse's income, that should be sufficient. My Senior Year promises many opportunities, one being the Interior Design elective at Rancho, and the other a possible Internship. After researching a career in Interior Design, I am more eager than ever to get out there and do as much as I can to better prepare myself for the job. I have been actively involved in the Arts Since my freshman year in high school and plan to take the Interior Design/Fashion Merchandise class next year, which will better prepare me for pursuing a career in this particular field. There are many technical skills that I of course still need to pick up but those can and will be acquired through college training programs. Those two combined will help me stand out to employers in the future. Now that I am even more knowledgeable on this topic, I actually feel more assured that becoming a Designer is a big possibility. I also plan to receive a high school diploma which is required for entrance to any school that offers design programs and training needed for professional status (? 54). By working in a furniture or home improvement store, you will gain experience in helping customers choose and create ideas for items they want to add to their home or particular room.
