Imaginative journeys - yellow sumbarine
Upon the thought of the concept "Imaginative journeys", the initial response is to envisage a quest constituted by the fantastic, mythical and original - often assuming the form of a physical journey undertaken by the central characters of such a world. In many imaginative journeys, this is the case. The text 'Yellow Submarine' clearly demonstrates this dimension of the imaginative journey. We see the central characters embark on a physical journey - but one that embraces the illogical and absurd. Technically, they are making their way from one physical point to another. Yet the worlds in which they make this expedition are so detached from reality that it makes more sense for this seemingly 'physical journey' to be of an imaginative nature. The universe which has been created by the film represents more closely a sequence from a dream, rather than one governed by the rules and limits like our own. However, this world does not simply serve as an environment for the characters journey to take place in.The landscapes the characters travel through in 'Yellow Submarine' are populated with strange creatures (for
The imaginative journey is also the only type of journey that allows a literal escape from the pressures of reality. Both Homer and the audience are able to witness the consequences of his actions in the 'past' on the future, or in this case, the present day - in other words, the outcomes from choosing different paths (although here this is represented on a much larger, and exaggerated magnitude for entertainment value). She speaks of a human compulsion to find the 'genii loci', a term associated with the spiritual and the supernatural - and therefore perhaps the need to find something beyond the reality we know. The episode takes the audience on an imaginative journey which speculates, allowing us to witness a journey unbounded by the regulations of reality and fuelled by the writers imagination. The text "The Town Where Time Stands Still" by Shirley Goek-lin Lim alludes to such metaphysical desires which cannot be satisfied by the achievements of the journey which conforms to reality - such as material gain. Because it alludes to a goal detached from the realm of reality, implied is a journey which can only ever be undertaken by the human imagination. " His use of the physical metaphor emphasises how in reality, we can only ever travel one path - and the word "sorry" indicates the feeling of regret that only one can be taken. The journey lacking the possibilities of the imagination, then, is one which is governed by the limitations of our universe, and therefore one in which only one path can be travelled. This feeling is revisited in the third stanza, where he expresses that both paths looked equally attractive. Consequently, this barrage of strange images and animation leave the audience to interpret their significance - to make their own personal 'connections' with the abundant oddities within the film - thus taking us on our own personalised, and unique imaginative journey as our minds resort to more emotional connections where regular logic seems irrelevant. example, a fish with human arms performing a breaststroke motion), and covered with odd, out of place or seemingly useless objects (for example, the words "Love", "Know" and "Yes" are scattered across the utopian landscape of 'Pepperland'). Robert Frost's poem 'The Road Not Taken" examines this concept, and alludes to the limited nature of the real world which is far surpassed by our imaginations. If this is the case, then how far can the imaginative journey take us?If the physical or inner journey is one that takes us forward and inward respectively, then the imaginative journey has the ability to take us forward, inward, upward, downward, sideways and every other direction our minds will let us comprehend. Here the imaginative journey is one which transcends time, and the writer is able to explore some of the endless possibilities of the imagination.
