Adolescent Suicide

             Suicide is defined as the act of killing oneself. And in this day and age it is becoming more and more of a problem. Not only for a certain race or age, but also for adolescents. Most people would not think suicide is a major problem for today's youth, but the numbers keep multiplying each year. There are several reasons teens may feel the only way out is by killing themselves and a few of these reasons include; being popular, making the grades, having that special someone and many more. There are also many warning signs that can be caught before that special someone does the unpredictable. These warning signs can help friends and family members save their love ones just by paying attention to what is going on around them. So many teens of today's youth are choosing the easy way out and many psychologists are studying why teens do it and how it can be stopped.
             Depression accounts for ninety-five percent of all suicides. Depression is an illness that can alter the way a person thinks and acts, making it harder and harder for a person to think reasonably. Parents who have children with a depression problem seem to have an issue with understanding and talking to their child with the problem. Some parents look over the fact that their child is actually depressed, some think it is just a phase, some punish and yell instead of talking, and many blame their child for acting in such a way. All of these approaches made by "concerned" parents are actually pushing their child further and further away (Opalewski 1-2).
             Most people who work with adolescents are very aware of the extent of suicide. Many people do not understand, however, how to appropriately deal with it. The first step is to identify the root causes of teen suicide.
