SLOTS
There has been a lot of talk over the past months about bringing slot machines to Maryland. There are budget crises all over the state. The state feels that there are two ways to solve the problem: 1) raise taxes for everyone living in the state or 2) bring slots into Maryland to bring in more revenue. There are people living in Maryland who are addicted to gambling and they spend a lot of time in Atlantic City, Las Vegas and even other states with slot machines and they give a lot of money each year to these other places. Where as if Maryland had slot machines all of this money that people spend on slots each year will come into Maryland as opposed to other states. Slots should be approved for the State of Maryland. Slots should be approved for the State of Maryland. Right now, the State of Maryland is in a major crisis. The State knows that somehow they need to raise money, so the State will not be in debt anymore. The main idea they came up with was slot machines. Being that the State is so much in debt, there is barely any money for the government/state employees and there is especially no money for the public schools in the State. If Maryland was to approve slots, then public schools would not be in the major crisis they
But the State did not plan on putting slot machines on every street corner like they have in certain places, they were just planning on putting them at the two major race-tracks, Pimlico and Laurel, that are already built in Maryland that already attract a lot of people and where a lot of drinking already takes place. Some people might refute this reasoning and say that the State could give these schools more money if the State just raised the taxes of each person. Right now they are in the Spring season of horse-racing and if they were to set up the slot machines, then this would be a great opportunity for the State. As of now, the public school system is laying off many teachers, including some of the very best teachers they've had for years, because they can not afford to pay them. This would be the best way to go because it would cause a lot less problems for everyone. But there are many people living in Maryland who have a hard enough time paying taxes as it is and if the State were to raise the taxes even more then a lot of people would have major problems because they would just not be able to afford to pay the taxes anymore, because their salaries are not increasing they are just required to pay more money to the State. Because the bill was knocked down, it's back to the drawing board for Governor Bob Ehrlich instead of installing the slot machines, so the State could start gaining this money immediately. Although this is a possibility, people spend billions of dollars each year gambling and there are probably people who would like to gamble once in a while but they don't like traveling or can't travel and that would add even more money to the billions brought in each year, and this would definitely help the State with all of their needs. Another reason people might feel that bringing slot machines to Maryland would encourage more drinking and more people coming into the State when this is not necessary. If slots were brought into the State, then these schools would be able to keep their teachers. Finally, the people who believe that slot machines should not be brought to Maryland, also feel that it would be much easier to just raise the taxes for everyone. There are those people that would travel anywhere as long as there are slot machines in those places and by introducing slot machines the State's revenue would increase along with it's tourism which will also bring in money in other areas. They would say that this would be an easier way to bring more money into the State instead of bringing slots in, because there is no guarantee that the slots will bring in enough money to solve the budget crisis at local public schools. This might be taken further and people could say that there is no guarantee that slot machines would bring in enough revenue to supply the State and the public schools in the state with enough money to fulfill all their needs.
