Atomic Bomb DBQ

The United States made a very calculated decision when it decided to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. President Truman took into account many factors before he gave the okay to drop the bomb. The primary reasons for dropping the bomb to shorten the war and save American lives but a secondary reason was to intimidate the Soviet Union in the post World War II era. The military's analysis prior to the dropping of the bomb was that the war was essentially over by the summer of 1945. In the memoirs of General H.H. Arnold, commander of Air Force in WWII, he states that because of the success of U.S. bombing raids the Japanese could no longer carry on a large scale war. Therefore, he felt that the Japanese were on the verge of collapse prior to the atomic bomb. General Dwight D. Eisenhower advised President Truman in a meeting in July 1945 that the Japanese were on the verge of collapse. This was because the United States had recently conquered the Japanese islands of the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. The United States was pla

In a report to of a Scientific Panel to the Secretary of War on June 16, 1945, many scientists said that the dropping of the bomb would save countless American lives. Secretary of War Stimson said in his memoirs that if the war would continue until 1946 over a million American forces would perish. In a report of a scientific panel to the Secretary of War, many scientists believed that the dropping of the bomb would prevent war in the future. Byrnes thought that the use of the bomb would make Russia more manageable in Europe. President Truman also thought that the atomic bomb would intimidate the Soviets in the post World War II era. He also considered that by using the bomb the Soviets would be intimidated in the post World War II era and that by dropping the atomic bomb it would prevent future war. One of the main reasons for dropping the atomic bomb was to save American soldier's lives. The expert advice of the time believed that through the dropping of the bomb, the Soviets would be intimidated, and therefore it would hopefully prevent future war. The Japanese intended to fight till the end and the United States wanted to significantly reduce the length of the war with the atomic bomb. This code valued death over dishonor and this caused the Japanese to fight to the end. In Leo Szialrd's recollection of a 1945 meeting between James Byrnes and a group of concerned atomic scientists, he says that Mr. The hope was that the atomic bomb would shorten the duration of the war and would cause the Japanese to surrender. James Byrnes would later become Secretary of State under President Truman and became one of his closet foreign policy advisors. His intent for dropping the bomb can be seen from a radio address that he gave in 1945.
