Why did sherlock holmes stories become so popular?

             From studying 'A Study in Scarlet' and 'A Scandal in Bohemia' why do you think Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories went on to become popular all around the world
             I am writing this essay on what I think made Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories become so popular all over the world. The characters of Doyle's stories were mostly based on real people and in fact Sherlock Holmes himself was actually based on a real life person Doyle knew, Doctor Joseph Bell who worked at the same place as him, another one of his former colleagues who he based one of his characters on was a man called Moriarty who Doyle used as Holmes' arch nemesis. Before Doyle became a full time writer he studied medicine at Edinburgh University and briefly worked as a doctor. Doyle was the author of over sixty books, including historical novels (The White Company) science fiction (The Lost World...that inspired Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park) and numerous other popular fiction short stories. Popular fiction is often referred to as mindless entertainment but how then can Sherlock Holmes be classed as popular fiction if it has stunned the world with its complexity and popularity. Doyle always wanted to be taken more seriously and I believe he was, he just didn't realise it. If Doyle wasn't taken seriously I don't think he would have made the impact on the world that the Sherlock Holmes stories did, even today, Sherlock Holmes is as famous as he was in the late 1800s, early 1900s when it was written. For example, there have been so many TV and film adaptations of Sherlock Holmes such as Steven Spielberg's 'The Young Sherlock Holmes', Disney's 'Basil the Great Mouse Detective' and Britain's Granada Television series.
