In C. Lee Harrington and Denise D. Bielby's, "Constructing the Popular," they give the reader a brief introduction to pop culture research, the three major schools of thought, and some of the areas of debate in this study. There are three major schools of thoughts: Cultural Studies, Production of Culture, and Popular Culture Studies. Although all three schools share in the "legitimacy of pop culture research" (3), they have "different underlying assumptions about the nature and consequences of the processes of cultural production and consumption (3)." Although there are more areas of debate in this literature than consensus, there are some key issues most scholars can all agree upon. Three areas of debate in the study of popular culture are the origins of it, whether popular culture is really created "by the people, for the people" and whether scholars should approach pop culture research in an evaluative way. " While all scholars have different approaches in conducting their research, there is a general agreement that different approaches generate different questions which in the end generate different results. There are five major cultural processes "that should be emphasized in studying the circuit of culture, including representation, identity, production, consumption, and regulation (11). Their definition of popular refers to beliefs and practices widely shared, and Coolio's, "Gangster's paradise" is music widely shared throughout a community. culture can only be understood when it is related with all other aspects of social life. They also "support a diversity of methodological approaches to the study of popular culture. Also, the rap was produced to be consumed and was made by the people for themselves. This song fits Raymond William's definition of what is considered popular.
