Extinction of gender

Since the beginning of time, every man and woman has been placed into a gender specific role. Everyone is taught from their first breath to their last, what is means to be a "man" or a "woman." Everyone and thing in society influences our view and definition of what our gender roles are. Males and females play very different roles and these differences are apparent in our every day lives but over time these differences have become blurred and are not as clear as they used to be. In this paper I will look at the historical roles of me and women and how society has changed its view of gender. Around the beginning of the 20th century men and women had very specific gender roles. Women in Western culture were bound to their homes; very few had jobs during this time period. Women usually stayed home and cared for child

This was a great victory for women, as it became the stepping-stone for many future gains in the women's movement. Our society has advanced to the point where there are not such defined boundaries on what a woman can achieve. For example women today are still expected to care for the children and take care of the home, but it is more acceptable for a man to take a more active role in sharing those types of responsibilities. The males were the ones who made all of the money and decisions for the household. The gender roles within modern society are much less defined. Although the male gender roles today aren't that much different from their traditional ones of the past, they have changed. We have progressed a lot as a society, gone are the days where women are stuck at home cooking and taking care of children, today they have the same opportunities to achieve just as much men. This concept is best described in a quote by Franklin Thomas "One day our descendents will think it incredible that we paid so much attention to things like the amount of melanin in our skin, the shape of our eyes, or our gender, instead of the unique identities each of us has as complex human beings. Many women have accomplished achievements that early 20th century women didn't even dream about such as voting. Men were looked upon as the head of the family and were expected to act as such. Voting was a right gained by women in 1919. Many women of this time couldn't even grasp the concept that they could strive for better. Overall though, society is getting closer to the dream where "all men are created equal" and if it continues on the same path, one day the word gender will be obsolete. During this period women had no rights and were considered the property of their fathers, until they were passed onto their husbands.
