Tragic Heroes
Throughout literature authors often create complex characters who over the course of time in the work become tragic heroes. In the three works of literature that will be discussed, each of them contain a main character who suffers some sort of demise and becomes a tragic hero. The first work of literature that will be examined is Sophocles', Oedipus the King. Next, William Shakespeare's, Othello will be looked upon. And lastly, Things Fall Apart, written by Chinua Achebe will be discussed. Each of the character's in these works all contain a vital flaw which brings upon their eventual downfall. The first character that will be examined is Oedipus. Oedipus is a tragic hero due to the fact that he is a very intelligent and clever man. This is exemplified with his ability to solve the riddle of the Sphinx, which until he came along, no one else in Thebes could do. Unfortunately, he is not perfect. Even though he has the ability to solve this riddle, he is unable to solve the riddle to his own mystery. His flaw is his inability to see the truth, and his refusal to recognize and heed to the warnings given to him by the prophet, Tiresias. Oedipus makes many errors in judgment and it is because of his pride and his unwillingness
Whether it was Oedipus and his inability to see the truth, or Othello, unable to see who truly were his friends or lastly, Okonkwo, who could not see change and adopt with it. Tiresias angrily announces the true murderer. In this instance, Obierika comes to visit Okonkwo in Mbanta two years after his exile. He is charmed by her stunning beauty and grace. As it can be seen through the analysis of these three characters, tragic heroes come in all shapes and sizes, in novels and plays alike. Now he has won our brothers, and our clan no longer act like one. What makes Othello a tragic hero is the fact that he has spent his entire life on the battlefields of war. Another example of Oedipus not able to connect ends to solve his riddle can be seen on page 25, lines 2 - 4, where Tiresias states, "I say that without knowing it you are living in shameful intimacy with your nearest and dearest. He ignores everything she tells him. Throughout the play, there is an innumerable amount of lines which show that Oedipus is unable or in some cases unwilling to make connections and solve his problem. His accusations are once again, one more example of Oedipus' inability and unwillingness to see the truth. Iago tells Othello that he had found the handkerchief in Cassio's room and that his beloved Desdemona may have lied with someone else. Two more small examples of Okonkwo not seeing the changing ways is the fact that the church was in the church was in the Evil Forest, he felt that it would be destroyed because of where it was located.
