The Rhetoric of Hope and Despair: A Study of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Jefferson Airplane American Quarterly, Vol. 23, No. 1(spring, 1971), 25-45 In this journal, Lawerence Chenoweth is trying to develop an understanding of a time period in the late 60's and throughout the 70's is referred to as the "generation gap". Chenoweth believed that even thou there where many social problems at this time due to war, racism, unresponsive political institutions, most have not found it necessary to resort to revolutionary or hippie roles. On the other hand, later songs talked of love only bringing misery. They also choose past experiences to create a dreamt up world. In their version of "Let's get together," they sang of how love would be the key to bringing peace into the world. As misguided as they may be, this is the only ulterior motive to peace threw non-violent ways. It is believed that threw the style in which Jimi played the guitar; there was a chaotic way that his music came out. At this time people are seeking peace, and because of a loss of leadership, they are turning to the misguided leaders of rock; who at this time; through the lyrics of their songs, seem to be the only ones who truly understand how they feel. In his first album Jimi sang of Love and confusion"Purple Haze", that the thoughts of love and color where so distorted in his mind he was really unsure if he was truly happy or not.
