Commentry On the poem Originally

The poem "Originally" was written my Carol Ann Duffy, a Scottish poet, in 1994. The poem is about her leaving home and moving into "the city". Throughout the poem she expresses how she feels about how she has lost her identity and her "culture". In the third stanza she wrote about how she is starting to fit in her new society "like the rest". However she feels isolated from their ways of living. The opening of the first stanza is straightforward. Carol Ann Duffy begins the poem by writing "we came to our own country". This sentence shows a sense of belonging. Later on she writes "in a red room". This can perhaps be a mother's womb, the place where we are originally from. The poem goes on with a cheerful tone of "our mother singing". This could be because she is talking about her memories. The repetition of the word "Home" shows us how she is still holding on to her memories and her anxiety not to move away. This poem could be a metaphor for growing up, something that we will all experience. Later on the poem we notice that the poem is starting to get more personal. The poet is building up her thoughts and feelings making a more personal approach. She writes about "the stre

She is illustrating how everyone is different some take it slowly while others take it fast. The ending of the second stanza is similar to the first. The second stanza is about change in her life and moving away from her home to a new one, or it could be a change from childhood to adulthood. The tone later on becomes more aggressive. Where do you come from? Strangers ask. This is shown when she says "my voice in the classroom sounding like the rest". I believe this shows us the intimacy of the surrounding is just an illusion and the child has been deceived. The poem is not only relevant to us nowadays as it tells us about growing up and the changes that occur from childhood to adulthood. A "snake" is considered a dangerous creature. The first stanza is about her past as a child in her home filled with good memories. It is relevant to many people as it talks about one person's feelings and emotions that we can all relate to, or will relate to someday. The poem is split into three stanzas, each consisting of eight lines. This shows us that she feels doubt about her own worth. It shows that she doesn't want to move on.
