WW1 DBQ Essay

Europe exploded in the 20th century, setting the stage for a conflict that would shatter the very foundations of the continent. As regional hostility & competition grew, World War 1 began as the first armed struggle to witness the complete mobilization of society at large, while the effects of the war left a fatal toll on the population, devastating the stability of Germany. With the rise of 19th century new imperialism, competition among European countries increased. The brutality of colonialism, which marked the end of many lives, served as an indirect cause of the war, heightening global tensions. The early 20th century also bore witness to many political and social crises in and around Europe that led politicians to willingly pursue a foreign war to divert attention from domestic conflicts, as demonstrated by the effects of the Dreyfus Affair. Increased militarism also served as a cause of the war, as Britain and Germany set the sea as its stage for naval discord. As the oddly enthusiastic responses to World War 1 delineate the social effects of the war, the political effects lie in the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and the utter financial chaos Germany was left in. The social fabric of the era changed as women figured m

The weakness of the Ottoman state allowed the territories to be taken away from them. The republic prevailed over the constitutional monarch, and the principle of political self-determination emerged as Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points increased in global prominence. These tensions fueled the beginnings of WW1, assessed by Germany's Weltpolik-the nation's desire to play a greater role on the world stage. Soldiers had to deal with rats bloated from chewing on human corpses, noise from artillery, and extreme boredom as the war was dragged on. Gavrilo Princip, Ferdinand's assassin, had operated with the Black Hand. Seeing that Serbian authorities were tied to the bloodshed, the Austrians issued an ultimatum that was clearly made to provoke a Serbian refusal and achieve war with the Serbian state, a war that the Austrians looked forward to. The republic replaced the constitutional monarch as the standard type of government, and the belief that nations have the right to political self-determination arose. The Fourteen points clearly argued against colonial rule, ultimately allowing for the principle of nations to have political self-determination prevail. Politically, the effects of the war left a battered Germany with 6 million casualties. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand ignited the fuel for a gruesome 4 year war that would take the lives of 8. 5 million men, injuring over 23 million. This led to the creation of a republic, which was empowered by the signing of the armistice that brought the war to a close.
