The importance of setting in Dreiser's and Faulkner's storie

Setting in short stories is mainly significant. It is important because it reflects in a number of ways the characters and events. The nature of characters, their mood their problems and the significance of what is going on are evident in the locations and surroundings. Especially in short stories author has to express his ideas clearly and principally setting helps us to catch the main idea and plot of the work.In twentieth century prose we can figure out two authors of short stories T.Dreiser and W.Faulkner. The description of settings plays great role in the principles of their writing. They paid much attention to settings in order to help reader to understand the work. Setting gives us opportunity to accept the atmosphere of the story, the environment in which heroes lived and these conditions have great influence on characters. While choosing the season, time e.t.c. author had a concrete purpose. In both stories we can get a clue for understanding the work form their title. For example "Dry September". Dry means something lifeless, weak. From the very beginning author uses such expressions like "bloody September", "dry grass", "stale pomade stale breath". But on the other hand September means autumn, the season of romance

The key words in these descriptions are "commonplace", "dull" and "ordinary". It was almost impossible to breath because of the stale air and durn weather: "the air was flat and dead. It enables the author to influence the readers' perception of the story and their attitude towards the characters. Faulkner wants to mark the tension that takes place till the end of the story which is more important than the acts, and in fact nobody knows what happened in deed. " Faulkner states by this last description of the setting, that the society is ill, is almost dead morally, and any hope to change or improve it is useless. " This stale air as already entered not only into the room but also into their souls. The setting in "The Second Choice" has a symbolic meaning and plays a really significant role in revealing the main idea of the story. Here we see the picture of calm nature, which is contrasted to the dark of the men's life. Nature does not justify the deeds of people but it is scared, it's in horror. This opposition helps us to understand the character most vividly and effectively: "the house was neat and fresh as a birdcage and almost as small, with its green-and-white paint". Faulkner describes the street which also is full of hostility and uses words in order to emphasize the image animosity and staleness: " the spare lights, insect swirled, glared in rigid and violent suspension of the lifeless air. It is mostly the setting which helps the author to create real image of the world, of the society and at the same time to open for the readers the personalities of the characters, that is why it is necessary to analyze and compare it. In "Dry September" the setting can also be regarded as the description of the total hostile environment of the society. For Faulkner it was more important to make feel this constant tension in life of people than just to describe some cruel actions of for example McLendon and his partners.
