A Fool: An Analysis of George Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant" Shoot the elephant or don't shoot the elephant? To some readers it is an easy decision; hard for some. When he finds out that when an elephant is out loose, he realize he must kill it; in order to relieve the stress that was enduring inside him. At times when the protagonist gets insulted, he feels a "greatest joy in the world would be to drive a bayonet into someone's guts". With all the stress that the narrator has been through, killing the elephant was one of ways to relieve his anger and frustration. But after finding out that the elephant stampeded through a couple huts and killed a cow and a man. At the time of imperialism, an army officer was stationed in the country of Burma. He despised his job and the people so much that we would rather kill people in order to get rid of his frustration. He hated the people who made his job "impossible". From despising his job to hating the Burmese; stress and frustration is building up inside him. The protagonist was stationed in Burma without his choice and now is being ridiculed by people who he doesn't even know. After Burma has been taken over by imperialism, the Burmese had an anti-European feeling about the British. He despised his job and he hated the Burmese. When the protagonist finds out an elephant was ravaging through the city, he hesitated what to do. He realizes that "it was perfectly clear what I ought to do".
