Culture
Two Cultures in the Western Civilization Coming to United States and adapting to two cultures was a challenge. I was born in Afghanistan and raised in Pakistan. After coming to the States, and seeing how different this place was compared to where I was raised at, I wanted to change what I was. However, my parents were not ready for the drastic change because they are true Afghans, meaning they have a strong belief in their culture and religion. Moving to America changed a lot of things in my life. For instance, I had to learn more and more about the customs of my culture, since America is a non-Muslim country. They became somewhat strict because they thought I would turn out "an all American girl," and forget about my background. While, all I was only trying to be confident about myself in public.I then began to set off to school and interacting with my fellow American classmates, I soon began to think like them. Now, most Afghans that see me usually think that I do not want act like an Afghan or
Back home education is not something that everybody has; this is since most people cannot afford it. I would not essentially say my parents are stringent, but they are said to be somewhat conservative. By doing this, my parents would be happy and I could fit in with my friends as well. Living in a diverse society keeps everybody interacted with the whole world. I began to keep two different personalities for when at home and when at school or with friends. Soon I learned everyone's is different. This is where I made the decision to intertwine with both. This is a major "no-no" in our culture. I speak with a lot of respect and decency with my parents and try to abide by everything my parents articulate. I used to get embarrassed by my culture, just because nobody really knew anything about my background. I am not permitted to date and my social outings with my friends are usually monitored, which can get quite infuriating as well. I do not have to dress like some of the narrow minded Afghans. It is our background that makes us all different and shows who we really are. As a teen, I saw my friends having boyfriends, going on dates, and taking boys home for their parents to meet.
