Organizational Culture Inventory
Organizational Culture is defined by some as the observed customs, rites, ceremonies, stories and beliefs within an organization. Others define it as the conscious beliefs that influence employee's attitudes and behaviors. Organizational Culture Inventory (OCI) provides a snap shot in time evaluation of the organization in terms of 12 specific types of behaviors and indicates how the organization compares to other organizations. The Organizational Inventory also provides Ideal profiles created from similar organizations results to allow for comparison against. The organization I chose to use for the OCI is Retalix Ltd., which is a software development and support company dealing with Point of Sale solutions for the food and convenience retail industry. Retalix is an international company based out of Israel and has offices in 52 countries with over 900 employees. The US headquarters is in Dallas Texas. The office in Pittsburgh has 70 employees which serve as sales, customer support, service and software development, IT, shipping and receiving and administrative functions. This business was originally called Retail Control Systems (RCS) founded in 1974 and purchased by Re
Each software developer is expected to "do whatever it takes" to ensure that the software schedules are met with a very low defect rate. In the early days of development of the ScanMaster product, their were very few customers and the development was pretty free form with a couple key employees taking total ownership over the product and developing it over a 2 year period of time with little pressure from scheduling or levels of control for content, quality and timely delivery. The quality assurance personnel are also expected to "do what ever it takes" to ensure that the software meets very high levels of quality before the software is released. Conclusion The OCI has been extremely helpful in my understanding of the various cultural styles abundant in business today and to see the levels at which these cultural styles exist within Retalix today. This style is very useful in support of the primary Perfectionist style. When employees meet expectations consistently, they are usually rewarded with favorable reviews, performance bonuses and occasional pay increases. The software has been deployed since 1990. They are also given higher levels of responsibility and expectations. Style behaviors within Retalix The Perfectionist style of behavior is a culture that has been developed over time at Retalix. Current Culture Assessment The completed OCI Circumplex indicates Retalix is strongest in the Aggressive / Defensive Styles that includes cultural norms that reflect the expectations for employees to be forceful in working tasks to protect their security and status. Also, corporate processes and regulations made it very difficult to continue to provide personal support of the employees outside of work. The Primary style is the Perfectionist style scoring higher than 90% of the other OCI responses.
