Appeal of Folktales to Children

             For a long time now folktales have been one of children's favourite forms of literature. They are able to enhance a child's learning and psychological well being.
             When reading a folktale you are able to get a sense of the structure and many of their characteristics quite easily. During a brief introduction the setting of a folktale is established early in a story. This is usually achieved by a basic generalisation, such as a castle, the woods or a mansion. The time of the story is also given with the common phrase such as "once upon a time" or, "as summers and winters passed". The main characters are introduced and the problem or conflict of the story.
             The development in the plot is now brought in, which brings forward the problem or conflict noted in the introduction. This is one of the main appeals for folktales, the action. This due to the fact that they are very exciting, fast moving with lots of action and conflict. The action builds up gradually until it reaches a climax. This is where the problem or conflict is resolved. Usually before the climax the main character or hero will face many obstacles and challenges. It is then after the culmination that brings the conclusion in which everything is resolved, where the good guys are happy and the villains are punished and poetic justice is seen to be done. A common conclusion would be "and they lived happily ever after". The conclusion usually comes as promptly and briefly as the introduction. (reference)
             From an adult's perspective the appeal of folktales is that they are able to help develop a child's power of prediction and language patterns. With their predictable form and content and diverse origins, they help children develop a sense of narrative structure and are an essential basis for future understanding of world literature.
