A Streetcar Named Desire

            This story describes the plight of the lead character, Blanche Dubois. Blanche Dubois, a small time school teacher and daughter of a once wealthy land owning family from Mississippi, goes to her sister's home to calm her nerves after being stressed by the loss of her family property. At least, this is the story told to her sister Stella who seems to be happily married to a man called Stanley Kowalski, a brutish, uneducated working class Polish-American. Blanche, posing as refined aristocrat, simply can't stand Stanley who, in return, can't stand the ageing Blanche that brought discomfort into his happy marriage. Conflict between the two rises as times passes by, and intensifies with Stella's pregnancy and Blanche's seduction of Stanley's shy and mild mannered best friend Mitch Mitchell. When Stanley discovers some unflattering details about Blanche's past, the conflict would reach its violent ending.
            
             Blanche clings on to her past as a the only source of real happiness in her life. She refuses to accept that things have changed, and that she is not the woman she was ten years ago. One thing that Blanche will forever dwell upon is her looks. She can't accept that she is no longer young and beautiful. She insists on convincing everyone of this. "You know that I haven't put on one ounce in ten years, Stella." Perhaps it is true that Blanche had not gained any weight, but the fact that she feels the need to brag about it illustrates her own insecurity. Blanche is very insecure about her aging looks, so much so that she feels the need to deceive Mitch, a man who she wants to marry. "What it means is I've never had a real good look at you, Blanche." Blanche is obsessed with making people see her as the girl she was ten years ago, rather than the aging woman she is today.
