The Alchemist
Life can be a benevolent dream, characterized by the beliefs and wonders one hopes to seize every waking moment; or, more simply, life can be meant just to dream for a waking moment. Such complex thoughts can be philosophized and studied for centuries to come, but the answer is hidden behind the simple idea of destiny and the path it creates for the heart. The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho delves into the psychological state of a young shepherd boy, Santiago, and his belief in powers of fortune and the hidden reasons for all that happens in the universe. Paulo Coelho exposed the secrets of Alchemy through literary conventions that he not only evoked through the psychosomatic ties between all persons, but he utilized his abilities to clarify the concept of self realization. He demonstrated the emotional and mental strife people have been facing everyday in order to achieve all that they have always wished for; to merely realize their "Personal Legends" and find their hidden treasures. All of this can only be accomplished through the basic view of the little kid that exists in every person. He thanked God for making him believe in his Personal Legend. The Alchemist showed him that "Courage is the quality most essential to understanding [his Personal Legend]," (113) if he did not follow up on his dream then "[He will] spend the rest of [his] days knowing that [he] did not pursue his Personal Legend, and that now it was too late. Through all the hardship that he faced, all the pain that felt, all the love and contentment that he witnessed, Santiago taught himself a lifetime of wisdom and went through a lifetime of experience. Santiago's simple nature and ingeniousness characterized a very unique and ironic trait of complexity about him that not only showed him all the marvels of the world, but made him understand that life comes and goes; all he could do was accept it. She showed him that if everything was meant to be, then the risks he took were a figment of the imagination, since everything conspired in his favour. " (70) Santiago understood that if he wanted to find his treasure and realize his dream he had to follow up on the decisions that he made. The Crystal Merchant seemed like a discouraged man with no real future ahead of him. He opened his mind up to a benevolent dream characterized by beliefs and wonders he once hoped for and then seized; life was then meant for him to dream for another waking moment. The Crystal Merchant and the Alchemist helped Santiago struggle through obstacles and face unfamiliar experiences. As time passed, his mind became flexible and he understood that "'The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.
