AR (accelerated reading)

             It is the dream of every parent that his or her child or children be given the best education in order to become successful. We want them to have the best math and reading skills that they can achieve and be educated by the best teachers. We want to see them make it in college without a struggle. Unfortunately this is hard for some students because they may have learning disabilities that hinder them from grasping their knowledge as quickly and easily as other children. In the school year 1999-2000 some schools started using the Accelerated Reading Program. This program is designed for students who are not progressing in reading development and are at risk for reading difficulties. It is used in conjunction with the STAR Program. This program determines the child's reading grade equivalence (reading achievement).
             In the program the children are allowed to select books that are based on their reading level to read. The books are color coded or labeled so that the child will know what books to select from. Once they have read the book they take a practice quiz over it. This quiz gives the student and teacher feedback on how well the student comprehends and helps the teacher monitor how the student progresses. For example my son read a book called "Hanging Out With My Mom", on his accelerated reading quiz he had questions like who is the main character, what did they do, etc.
             Some people argue that the accelerated reading program is not beneficial to the students at all. I am the parent of a nine year old who is in the accelerated reading program at his school. My son has a learning disability and this program has helped him tremendously and is continuing to help him. He has struggled a great deal; he is in the third grade and on a second grade reading level.
