A hand in the Grave

             In the story " A Hand in the Grave" by Ghassan Kanafani, the author talks about two medical students and the mission that they partake one night. They are required to bring to school the following day a corpse so that it can be studied. Since neither of the two medical students can afford to buy a corpse, they decide to visit a local cemetery to dig one up. The story is read from the point of view of the first person style of writing. The conflict is dealt in a Man vs. Himself conflict. The characters in the story are the following: Nabile, who the story is told from his point of view, is a medical student. Suhail is another medical student who goes with Nabile to find a skeleton for his class.
             In the beginning of the story Nabile is at home talking to his sister. His father actually questions him as to why he is up so early in the morning. Nabile tells him that he is going to go out to look for a body for school. His father at first is not taken aback by the comment and actually thinks that his son is lying to him. His sister actually tells Nabile why he is lying to his father about what he is going to do. His son even says to him that if he is given a certain amount of money to buy one then he wouldn't have to go and find one. His father assumes that it's just his son trying to get some money from him. After his father says no to giving him money he goes out to meet his fellow student, Suhail to go find a body.
             When they both finally get together, Suhail is explaining to Nabile that he also was not able to get any money to get the corpse. They both enter the cemetery and start looking for a grave that is at least twenty years old. Although I sense that they are both scared, the writer who is writing for Nabile point of view stats that he is scared. But he also says he's not as scared as Suhail is.
