Fad Dieting
Since the early 1900's, Americans have been obsessed with dieting. Everyone is always looking for the fast, easy way to get the job done; this leads to many fad diets. The latest craze in the fad diet world is the low-carb diet. Among these diets, the two that are the most recognized are the Atkins diet and the South beach diet. Though each is successful in their own ways, they have drawbacks that should be looked at before deciding to use one of the two. These drawbacks are keeping many skeptical dieters at bay for the time being. Through my research, I will evaluate a few different sources to find if this diet is not only effective, but also safe. I will seek to find articles that may be useful for someone making a decision on what diet to use. I will be evaluating The New York Times, The Long Beach Press-Telegram, and WebMD, which is a website, for their helpfulness on information pertaining to the topic, their credibility, and their ease of use. The first thing to look at when deciding what diet to attempt is how useful the diet is to you and your body. There are many factors that have to be taken into account when deciding this. These include how much weight you are trying to lose and also the amount of time
They all are credible and easy to use. I would recommend using WebMD more if you are looking for facts on any medical or health related topic. WebMD gives us some insight from the other side. Mary Vernon, MD, suggests that some people against the low-carb, in particular the Atkins diet, do not understand how it works. They were clearly written and did not use many medical terms that no one would understand and if they did, they were explained in the article. Each of the sources has their ups and downs. The New York Times does not site any PHD or MDs. Another important factor to consider when evaluating sources is if the information comes form a credible source. Both The Long Beach Press-Telegram and WebMD also give useful information on the side effects and the upside to the low-carb diets. Fisk contradicts that the low-carb diet works because it is low in carbs. You can type in anything health or medical related and there will be an abundance of articles on that topic. The site offers a very wide variety of topics. The site only uses information that has been researched and is backed by a PHD or MD. I believe the final piece to look at when evaluating sources is seeing how easy the article or website is to use. All of the sources I have evaluated seem very credible.
