Those around Jasminda have the perception that she is very much alike to many other Indian girls. Expected to be polite, family orientated and spiritual young ladies, they are presumed to 'marry an Indian boy and have Indian children.' However the difference between Jasminda and other Indian girls is that instead of dreaming to be married with children, her dream is to score for Manchester United alongside David Beckham, her idol. The only thing keeping her from this ambition is her heritage. Consoling her problems to a poster of Beckham, Jasminda thinks about an arranged marriage and what she can get out of it. PinkyIn an attempt to obtain perfection and a trauma free life, Pinky desperately tries to organize her life and follow a plan. While her family struggles to maintain their Indian culture in an English society and remain accustomed to their traditional values; Pinky is struggling to maintain her love match marriage and make it both modern and cultural. She is able to console her problems by complaining to her family and fiance about the stresses of her wedding and how other people seem to prevent her from obtaining her ideal goal. Striving for independence makes Pinky feel that she must outdo other people. Wearing the traditional costume and dress, her appearance obsessive ness and intimidation by the people around her loses its vitality, when she learns to be true to herself and enjoy the atmosphere. Not so reluctant to follow family cultures and traditions, the tension that Pinky has between her culture and needs as a young woman is diminished when she has her wedding. She also decides to be honest with her parents and family and this works in her favour when her family allow for her to play professional football in America. Unlike Jasminda, she is not reluctant to follow her Indian culture and family expectations; her ambition to be married. At her sister's wedding, Jasminda shows an act of maturity when she decides that she rather be loyal to her family then to play football. Jasminda asks for money to buy wedding shoes but then spends the money on a pair of sports shoes, and pretends to be sick while her parents are at church, to sneak off for football training. She finally realizes that she has reached her peak of insolence when she is caught out for going to Germany without her parents' permission. Needing some sort of assurance that she is well-liked by the people around her, Pinky conceals her personality to act like a polite and respectable young lady, only to reveal her true traits to her immediate family. Her obsession to her wedding and appearance causes Pinky to stress about minor details such as if someone is wearing the same colour outfit as her.
