             "Two souls, one heart" - French saying
             Love between a man and a woman is intimate and profound. It is sentiments that cannot be easily explain, yet it can be express through a mental and emotional thought such as Sandra Cisneros' poem, "Love Poem #1." She uses writing techniques that allow the reader to ponder the meaning of love and how two different people fall in love with each other. Thus, the poem describes a couple's powerful relationship and their opposite attractions in a metaphorical, structural, simile, and symbolic sense.
             Cisneros' uses metaphors and specific structures to emphasize the opposite attractions between a man and a woman. In the first stanza, "A red flag/ woman I am/ all copper/ chemical...," (Cisneros), this line portrays a metaphor of the woman and man's differences in occupation. Realistically, a person does not conceal their body with copper. Instead, the poet compares the woman to chemicals and metals, which suggests how the woman works in a science field as her career. In contrast, the man works as a contractor or construction worker since occupations that involve axes and injury usually deal with building vocations. Cisneros uses metaphors to stress the different lives the man and woman lead. Although the couples are opposites, the poet purposely cohere two different lives into one to demonstrate the bond the couple has, similar to how the words are cohere into one stanza. With this structure, it proves the power of love they both have despite the differences in jobs. Cisneros is able to convey the idea of how opposites attract.
             This poem also conveys similes to further highlight the strong bond between the woman and man. The third stanza was able to express this by stating, "We are/ connoisseurs/ and commandos/ we are rowdy/ as a drum/ not shy like/ Narcissus/ nor pale as plum," (Cisneros).
