Maya Angelo and Amy Tan
Maya Angelou and Amy Tan discuss religious problems and culture differences in there literature. The authors have captured these differences by there past experiences of friends and family. Both authors come from a diverse culture, but both face the same harsh society of the American culture and beliefs. The Author's both tell about situations in there short stories of being outcast and coming from different racial backgrounds and trying to triumph over these obstacles. Angelou and Tan both have a very unique writing ability and style in there short stories.Angelou feels different in the short story of "Champion of the World" because she is a young African American girl in a white society fighting racism and segregation. In this short story, a white male is beating down an African American male in a boxing match for the title, "...all the Negroes around the world who sat sweating and praying..." (Angelou 87). This translates to the racial aspects of the white society between the African American and
Tan's Chinese-American culture and life stories are imprinted in her writing; she gives the reader an opportunity to gain knowledge about the way of life in her family, friends, and even the Chinese culture. For instance the girl feels that if Joe was to lose the boxing match that African Americans ". Tan shows that she is embarrassed in her family for there lacking of proper American manners, Like in this situation where her "father leaned back and belched loudly, thanking my mother for her fine cooking. were back in slavery and beyond help. Maya Angelou and Amy Tan both write about growing up as a minority in the American Culture and the problems associated with it. In both accounts they were both outcast and different from the typical American, but were able to overcome there dilemmas. Although at the time she felt ashamed, these words ". " (Tan 93) from her mother she would soon understand later in life. Angelou and Tan differ in the since that Angelou writes about the racial problems she faced and how Africans Americans overcome this in small steeps. In Tan's short story the event is a Christmas dinner and how her family's manners and culture differs from the American society. Amy Tan feels differently because of Chinese culture and religions background, in the story ("Fish Cheeks") it shows that the family's Christmas is very different then the white male traditional Christmas.
