Understanding Emily in "A Rose for Emily"
While reading literature understanding who the characters are is essential in being able to understand the literature itself. Knowledge of character itself is essential in Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily." Not only does the reader need to understand who Emily is but they also need to know what type of character Emily is, in addition to the message Faulkner is trying to convey. In reading "A Rose for Emily," Faulkner makes it next to impossible not to understand who Emily is and how to identify with her. Emily lived with her father in a somewhat large house in Jefferson. Her father tried to keep her to himself by not really letting her go out in public. He also didn't like the fact that Emily was old enough to have male friends. He tried to keep her in and didn't let her go out with anyone of the opposite sex. Well, he really didn't let her go out at all. Because of Emily's father, she was not connected with her peers and the outside world. This made it hard for her to find love with Daddy in the picture. She lived with her father until his sudden death. Since it was all Emily had known, she kept to herself after her father's death. She taught the children of Colonel Satoris mistress' the art of painting china. Emily
People are always into what other people are doing, where they are doing it, and how they are doing it. He didn't go in the locked room of which it is believed that Homer died in. Although all it really seemed like was that the people wanted Emily to die. Emily has many traits but the changes she undergoes make her dynamic. These traits aren't the only thing that makes Emily who she is. Understanding who Emily is allows the reader to identify with the message Faulkner is trying to display. Emily is a round character in that she is fully developed. There were two major changes Emily underwent, the death of her father and meeting her sweetheart Homer Barron. Although this is how society is, it really seems sick to think that the people of this world are wrapped up in everyone else's lives. Next there were the spiritual changes Emily went through. This message Faulkner displays is not a new concept. Even with the people knowing this they were still concerned with what she was up to and how she was. The side work included going to the market and keeping the alderman away from Emily so she wouldn't have to pay her taxes. People shouldn't be concerned in what others think; they should be themselves just like Emily.
