Effects of Nonverbal Communication on the Receiver

             The purpose of this review is to give a summary of the research that has been conducted in the last decade concerning nonverbal communication and its role in building rapport. The studies discussed range from an overview of the nonverbal identifiers of rapport to the manipulation of certain nonverbal cues in order to influence the receiver. The results show how important nonverbal behavior is in building rapport and how useful nonverbal communication can be in establishing good relationships and partnerships. The research will be discussed in the following order: first, we will define rapport so that the focus of the research is clear; then we will discuss how nonverbal and covert communication can be used to elicit responses from troubled children and how self-fulfilling prophecies are brought about through the use of nonverbal communication; third, we will discuss the manipulation of nonverbal and how it can be used to deceive and influence others; lastly, we will look at how context is a factor in judging rapport.
             The word "rapport" is often hard to define as it is an intangible, emotional aspect of human social interaction and is viewed quite differently by different people. The best description that has been given to date is as follows:
             "Rapport is a term used to describe the combination of qualities that emerge from an interaction. These interactions are characterized by such statements as 'we really clicked' or 'we experienced great chemistry.' When you come away from a conversation that was two hours long and you feel invigorated, you have experienced an interaction high in rapport. Terms like engrossing, friendly, harmonious, involving, and worthwhile describe interactions high in rapport."
