The West Australian State Election of 2005

             The two main political parties in the West Australian state election to be held on Saturday 26th February 2005 are the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party. There are many differences between the two parties in regard to the policies they present. A lot of money has been spent in the last month through the media highlighting each party's campaign policies. The campaigns have been extremely intense and cover issues which directly affect all West Australians. The campaigns leave no doubt in anyone's mind about the party's priorities, the cost to the state and the candidates hoping for election in each local region and ultimately the job of Premier of Western Australia. Any citizen eligible to vote on Saturday should have no difficulty finding a policy or party which appeals to them.
             Possibly the most major difference in the election between the two major parties is that of water. Western Australia has been aware for many years of its water shortage, thus the implementation of water restrictions every year. Opposition Leader Mr. Colin Barnett wants to build a canal from the Kimberley to Perth estimating the cost at $2 billion. Barnett stated the 3700km canal would take 3 years to build. As time passes the $2 billion figure has increased to $6 billion – increasing the average household water bill by an extra $389.00 a year. The Australian Labor Party's answer to the West Australian water shortage is to build a desalination plant. The plant would be run entirely on renewable energy. This means there won't be any greenhouse gas emission. The Australian Labor Party says the cost of purchasing renewable energy will not exceed $11.7 million a year, the money coming from funds put aside for tree planting programs will purchase renewable energy.
