High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension), is a very common condition. High blood pressure that is left untreated will eventually cause damage to the heart muscle. Untreated high blood pressure can cause hypertrophy, thickening of the heart muscle, and cause the heart muscle to dilate and contract less forcefully, therefore not carrying the proper amount of blood to the rest of the body. Maintaining high blood pressure can also cause damage to the brain, eyes, and kidneys. There is no known cure for high blood pressure, but a lot of cases of high blood pressure can be controlled and managed with the proper diet and medication.

Taking these measures the physician can prescribe treatment. Blood pressure is expressed as a ratio of systolic pressure over diastolic pressure. The Systolic pressure is measured buring the heart's contraction phase(systole). n of a person's blood pressure being elevated. Generally, 120/80 is normal, 140/90 is high, and 90/60 is low for most adults. Patients might experience angina (Chest Pain), or shortness of breath, also a sign of heart disease or unknown damage. These people would be prescribed medicine, but would be advised to change things like their diets, weight loss, exercise, stop smoking, and reduce their salt intake. High blood pressure can also cause paleness or redness of the skin, excessive sweating, vision changes, nausea, confusion, and or fatigue among others. It could make a difference between life or the quality of life or death. The blood pressure is measured by rhythmic contractions of the heart. The physician orders blood test, urinalysis, a test to rule out kidney disease. Measuring the force of the blood being pushed against the walls of the arteries determines if the blood pressure is high or low. Through medication, lifestyle changes, and a physicians monitoring of the patients blood pressure, a lot fo progress can be made in managing the patients blood pressure. An echocardiogram is used to see the function and structures of the heart.
