The American Dream
The American dream is what mostly society thinks of. What is the American dream? Many people picture being successful in life, but I believe that the American dream cannot be envisioned by one thing. There are, variety of other things. Such as a white picket fenced house in the suburbs with a car, a dog, two kids, a nice education, individual choice. This American dream is not only alive in the minds of who live here but people abroad also have this vision and dream of having, the American dream.. I mean you can't go around asking everyone and taking polls of everyone that lives in American about his/her perfect little picture of the "American dream". The fact that the dream has become so corrupted by greed and full of materialism draws all these immigrants form different parts of the world, who thinks there is a better life in America. Just to achieve this American dream many people are willing to give up on a lot of stuff, but is all that really worth it in the end? Do dreams really come true? If just to achieve the American dream one has to pay such a huge amount I don't think that dream is worth it. Just because she failed and had to face the embarrassment in front of others she turns around and blames her mother for it. You could become instantly famous" (Tan 1151). Not only the people who live here envision the American dream but also people abroad have this vision of life in America. What don't I understand? I wanted to know. She wants her to have all the things possible, she does not want her go through the pain she had gone through. She is ready to make all the sacrifice she can to get her education because she never had education. Just because she's seen it on TV and magazines she forces Jin-me to do stuff she does not like. Just because she didn't get the quilts, she forgets everything her mother had done for her all the sacrifice she made for her and tells her that she never seemed to understand her or their culture. "My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America. They think anything is possible over here. What happened to Dee? I wanted to know.
