             I feel that the ways by which death is discussed in children's literature are very important, as a large number of children are forced to deal with the death of a loved one each year. I think that many children turn to books as form of guidance and support and for this reason the ways death is portrayed is very important. Books that deal with the topic of death could play a crucial role in the way a child (who reads the book) will react if a death occurs in his/her life.
             I believe that David Sadler's article is a well-written study summarizing the common trends in the use of death in children's literature. I found the article clear and concise with interesting points backed up with textual examples. The author studied how the death of a grandparent was dealt with in 29 different pieces of literature. I found these examples to be very informative. The article brings up many reasons explaining why death should be discussed in children's literature, for example: it gives the child comfort, affirms life, teaches life long lessons, and offers coping strategies.
             The author states that there are four different stages in books about dying grandparents: The relationship between the child and the grandparent, the illness of a grandparent, the death of a grandparent, and the mourning and recovery of the child. I found these four stages to be accurate as they are depicted in several books I have read dealing with the death of grandparents.
             I chose this article in particular because I wanted to relate it to the novel Bone Dance by Martha Brooks. In this novel the main character deals with the death of both her father and her grandfather. I found the way Alex related to her grandfather's death fascinating. I found that the book was unique in the way Brooks dealt with issues of mourning, religion and spirituality.
