Physical and Intellectual Blindness
Essay: Physical and Intellectual Blindness "Oedipus the King", is a famous ancient Greek play written by "Sophocles". In this play, the main character, Oedipus was destined to kill his father, Lauis and to marry his birth-mother, Jocasta. As a result, his parents wanted to put him to death, however Oedipus' was spared and adopted by a king named Polybus. This tragic play introduced themes of blindness; not only physical blindness but also intellectual blindness. "Oedipus the King" developed the blindness from various characters and each character result into different tragedy eventually. The intellectual blindness of Jocasta went deeper and deeper throughout the play. She was married by Oedipus and lived with him for years. Apparently she did not realize Oedipus was his own son. As time passed by, every event that occurred brought upon some fragments of the truth. However, Jocasta did not seem to realize or accept that Apollo's prophecy was fulfilled and that Oedipus was her son. "It makes no sense" p.77 said Joacasta to Oedipus who was trying to find the truth about his identity by questioning the chorus leader. Oedipus was intellectually blind and became physically blind at the end. He only knew that the prophecy of Apollo is that he will kill his father and marry his mother. He could not see anything with his eyes. However, he finally realized the truth when talking to Jocasta. He regretted to what he had done, wanted not to see the horrors of his actions and he could not help thinking of all he has done. He became physically blind while he was no more intellectually blind. That was why Tiresias did not want to reveal anything. 17 Tiresias is a prophet of the god Apollo, so has greater power and intellect than many other humans. 77 to avoid Oedipus from knowing the truth. Hence, the intellectual blindness was the main reason that brought the tragedy to every character that suffered from it. He did not realize whom he had killed and married.
