A rose for emily
In the story "A Rose for Emily" the author was trying to illustrate the aftermath of a closure. Isolating a human being from the real world can sometimes lead to insanity. What Faulkner was trying to portray in his short story is how a sympathetic, caring and sensitive human being can turn into an emotionless stone; depending on how and where this person was brought up. I personally believe in facts. One of which is that we as a society shouldn't blame criminals for their act as much as blame the environment they live in, "every action has a reaction". Notice how crime rates usually increase dramatically as we move into deprived towns. It's a result of a lack in education which may also lead to segregation and immorality. What we should ask, is whether or not Emily was born a murder. Her father was over protective, selfish and harsh, what sort of morality would you expect Emily to carry with her as she grew up? According to the story she never experienced the real world before; she was forbidden to practice a relation
In this case Emily was going through a hard time, punishing herself for the murder of her father. Emily had always been a simple and innocent woman, until the point where she realized that her life was being thrown away. Emily couldn't take any responsibilities towards her action and stayed in denial, paragraph 26 "She told them her father was not dead". Her father acted as the society and Emily as a human being. She had several admirers in her past life but never had the chance to love them back. It happened in a split second, as she lost her temper and committed a crime. Instead, he skipped right into her father's nature and murder; he went on describing how fat she looked - paragraph six "She looked bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water"-hint! There are two common reasons why people gain weight, one they eat a lot, or two they are undergoing stress. This may explain the mystery behind her collapse and emerge the fact of her suicide. It this case it even affected the lovely, kind heart of Emily. Later on we learn that she demanded some poison from a druggist in paragraph 34 "I want some poison". He brainwashed her with hatred, selfishness, and violence; so he had to expect the outcome. Faulkner didn't mention Emily's goals or dreams; he didn't emphasize enough on her past life as a child, or what possibly could be going through her mind. There are hidden parts in this story that a typical reader would pace. Living a cold life with no social interactions what so ever may develop a sense of insecurity and ignorance.
