1984: a look at totalitarianism
In the novel 1984, George Orwell demonstrates how one governing body can manage to manipulate a whole country such as Oceania. Throughout our past we have seen totalitarian governments take absolute control over their countries. Some examples of leaders of countries that have demonstrated a totalitarian regime are Hitler, Stalin and Castro. Totalitarianism is a manipulative dictatorship that strives to limit the freedoms, abolish individuality, and brainwash its citizens. Would life be worthwhile without any freedoms? Totalitarian governments have many ways of brainwashing their citizens, and by doing so can maintain complete control over them. with a small freedom that had to stay hidden "by sitting in the alcove, and keeping well back, Winston was able to remain outside the range of the telescreen. "8 In the country Oceania, party members participate in the Two Minute Hate. "5 Members of the party are not allowed to speak their minds. No pleasure was to be obtained through sexual intercourse. "10 The totalitarian party in Oceania is able to brainwash its people into believing anything the party wishes them to believe. They are not to show any negative thoughts about the party.
