The World is Not Enough - different stages of production
Since 1962, there have been 5 different people who have played James Bond and 18 Bond movies. The film that I will be discussing is 'The World Is Not Enough' starring Pierce Brosnan, Judy Dench and Robert Carlisle. On the opening weekend, this film had a box office take of $37,000,000 compared to the $25,000,000 that the previous Bond movie 'Tomorrow Never Dies' took. So how is this film so successful? This essay looks at the significant aspects of pre production, production and post production to help to see how Bond 19 'The World Is Not Enough' was such a box office hit. The USA release date of 'The World Is Not Enough' was set to be on November 19th 1999, 2 years since the previous film. This gave Michael Apted, the director, 24 months to come up with a Bond film different to all the others. 'The World Is Not Enough' is Bond's family motto- it was the film to take us into the millennium, so it had to be good! The first thing needed was a script - it took Robert wade and Neil Purvis around 6 months to come up with an exciting yet diverse script. The thing about Bond is that he is always going from location to location never looking back. This is what sets 'The World Is Not Enough' apart from the others because Bond actually r
The scene I am mainly going to concentrate on, is the first meeting between Bond and Renard in the nuclear test facility in Kazakhstan, which is where Bond first meets nuclear expert Dr Christmas Jones. The sets in Pinewood Studios begin as 3D models, they then get built up to look realistic - this can cost millions of dollars. If the film is edited well, it is usually easier to compose music for the film because it has a beat to it, which makes it easier to lock music into the film. Photos and Interviews were done at the premier - guaranteeing a place in the next day's paper. This scene cost $2 million dollars to film and actually only takes up around 12 minutes of screen time, even though it took 4 or 5 months of on/off filming. The main campaign then begins as the release date approaches. Next, a very important aspect of pre-production is the budget. The demand for interviews is so high that a press junket has to be arranged a week before the release. The Bond theme is used in every film in different ways, it is mainly used to represent that it is the same person in all films. The star-studded cast also included Sophie Marseille, star of Braveheart, to play exotic and fiery Elektra King- one of Bond's many love interests. Some key sequences need to go into the trailer - the cast, the women, the guns and the explosions mainly! It is very difficult to control publicity and what is said about whom. Sales have increased significantly for these companies because of being associated with Bond- this is because people want to be related to Bond because of the air of sophistication that he gives off. Then, the most important part of post production - marketing. Simon works alongside him to get people to perform the stunts accurately yet safely.
