He is incompetent and this has carried him to be unable to endure his responsibilities as an adult. The only person he had was his sister Phoebe, she being his only support, and the only one he felt he could trust in. If Holden would not be turning into an adult, into an image he despises, he would not have had a mental breakdown neither he would have failed so strongly on accomplishing his responsibilities. His illusions make his life tolerable, fulfilling him at least for a concise time. If Walter Mitty was treated as an upright man, he probably would not have developed to a middle aged man who is constantly day dreaming. Mitty is dependent of other people because, when he escapes to his fantasies, he has no sense of reality, creating awkward situations for people who are around him when he is in trance. "'Puppy biscuit', said Walter Mitty. In the Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield is a sixteen year old boy who has been sent to a mental institution after having a mental breakdown. Holden and Walter Mitty live in a world of thoughts and dreams, where they, in certain way, manipulate the truth to hide their problems.
